Food Technology is often referred to as a life skills subject as many students take the knowledge and skills learnt at school and apply it beyond the classroom now and forever. Food Technology is a practical and theoretical subject that teaches students the importance of:
- Health, Safety and Hygiene Practices
- Healthy Eating
- Cooking Skills
- Food Science
- Evaluating Practices
In each year level students engage in a weekly or fortnightly practical classes, where they will make a variety of different savoury and sweet recipes. Theory classes are often used to support the practical classes and build on students' knowledge and understanding of food and food processes. Food Technology is compulsory in both Year 7 and 8 for one term and then becomes a semester-based elective in Years 9 and 10. The following electives are offered in year 9 and 10:
- World of Food - Year 9
- Catering and Hospitality - Year 10
- Food for Thought - Year 10
- Food Styling - Year 10
Students also have the opportunity to undertake Food Technology as a VCE subject in both Year 11 and Year 12. VCE Food and Technology focuses on the importance of food in our daily lives from both a theoretical and practical point of view. It also provides relevant background for future study in areas such as teaching, food science, health science and nutrition.
In VCE Food and Technology students will learn how to prepare food safely and hygienically so as to prevent food poisoning and accidents. They will also develop an understanding of key foods. Through their study of key foods they will develop the ability to analyse the taste, texture and appearance of foods they have prepared using their senses. They will also develop an understanding of the changes that occur in food during cooking and processing. Students will also have the opportunity to use their creativity to design, plan and prepare meals suitable for a variety of occasions. By the end of the course they will be able to select appropriate tools and equipment and demonstrate skills required for safe preparation, cooking and presentation of food.
